Difficulties in Middle School Students’Listening Comprehension and the Solutions

Abstract

For a long period of time, the teaching of English in China has mainly focused on the teaching of reading and writing in the early stage of English learning and neglected the teaching of listening and speaking, which brings a negative effect to the improvement of students’ ability of using the language. As one of the receptive skills, listening is the foundation to develop other language skills. This thesis based on the researches about the nature and the process of listening comprehension, aims at discussing the difficulties in Middle school students’ listening and the solutions of overcoming the difficulties in listening. The difficulties can be sorted in two aspects: linguistic and non-linguistic factors. The solutions are as follows: to build confidence to meet the challenge, to improve pronunciation, to build background knowledge, to master some listening skills. These are, taking notes, predicting, making inference, guessing the new words from the context and so on.

摘  要
 
    长期以来,中国的英语教学过于强调读和写的技能训练而忽略了听和说能力的培养,给外语学习者语言能力的提高带来不少负面影响。作为语言输入的1种重要手段,听力理解是提高其他语言技能的基础,不可忽视。本文立足于听力理解。在总结前人对听力理解的实质和过程的研究成果的基础上,针对学生听力学习中的障碍,探讨有效的解决办法,提高听力水平。其学生普遍存在的听力障碍主要归为两大类: 语言因素和非语言因素;其解决方法应从如下方面入手,即:建立信心来面对挑战,提高发音,积累足够的背景知识以及掌握有效的听力技能。例如,作笔记,猜测和推理听力内容,根据文章背景猜新词的意思等。
