English Film Title Translation in Light of Domestication and Foreignization Strategy

Abstract

Film is a kind of art with popular appeal. But for the cultural differences exist between eastern and western countries, proper and attractive film titles should be given to Chinese audience. Domestication and foreignization should be properly chosen to achieve the best result in translation and advertising. The translators should make an appropriate choice of domestication or foreignization strategy considering the foreign flavor and target audience’s cultural factors and language, aesthetic conception.
This thesis discusses domestication and foreignization strategy applied in English film title translation, and makes further analysis with specific ideas and problems based on examples in the practice of translation.

摘 要

电影巨大的影响力为其他艺术形式所不能比拟,然而由于中西方文化国家存在文化差异,要为西方电影构思1个精彩贴切的片名才能吸引中国观众。要使外语片名既能体现异域风情又能迎合译入语观众的鉴赏力,在翻译中就应合理地选择归化与异化策略,使译名取得最佳翻译及宣传效果。本论文探讨英语电影片名的翻译中采用归化和异化的策略问题, 如何结合片名的异国情调和译入语观众的文化因素,语言习惯,审美恰当地选择归化或异化策略。并结合实例进1步分析翻译实践中的具体思路及应注意的问题。
