The Transmission of Culture in English Language Teaching
in Junior Middle School
Abstract

Culture is the total accumulation of spiritual and material wealth that has been created in the process of the development of society. Language is a special kind of cultural phenomenon. Each language reflects the special culture phenomenon in different periods of the country. As the primary period of English education, English teaching in junior middle school should face up to the cultural differences and overcome the ‘culture shock’; otherwise its effect will be reduced. Culture comparison, multimedia teaching, classroom practice approach, extracurricular game approach, full usage of foreign teachers and teacher-training can be used to enhance the cultural transmission quality and effect in the junior English teaching. With the analysis of the characteristics of English teaching in junior middle school, some reasons for the failure in culture transmission in junior middle school are pointed out in this thesis. Then, this thesis discusses several methods which will make students like English gradually, understand the cultural differences, get the ability of using English appropriately in proper situations and achieve teachers’ teaching aims.

摘  要

文化是人类在社会发展过程中创造的所有精神财富和物质财富的总和。语言是1种特殊的文化现象。每1种语言都反映出使用语言的国家和民族在不同的社会历史时期所特有的文化现象。因此,在初级英语教育阶段,英语教学应该正视民族间的文化差异并克服“文化休克”现象。在初中英语教学中,可以采用比较法,多媒体教学法,课堂操练法,课外活动法,充分利用外籍教师之所长,加强教师队伍培训等来提高文化教育的含量。通过对初中英语教学特点的分析,本文总结出1些英语教学中文化教育不足因素,并在此基础上提出1些有效的英语教学应对策略,使学生能够逐渐地并真正地喜欢英语,了解不同语言文化的差异,从而在适当的场合使用适当的英语,最终达到良好的教学效果。
