On Popular English Periodicals Used as Non-English Majors’ Reading material

Abstract

In the English teaching and learning, the only textbook can not satisfy the student’s need and has no way to reach the demanded standard. Compared with the textbook, English periodicals have their advantages as they are have plentiful new contents, various articles, and interesting stories. Using them as material in reading will undoubtedly develop the student’s interest in English. After an overview of reading teaching this thesis reports an empirical study on the after-class periodical reading activities of the non-English majors in Huan Institute Science and Technology. The objects were non-English majors from Huan Institute Science and Technology and the instruments adopted included a questionnaire and interview. In the survey, particular attention was given to: the time students spent in English reading after class; students’ method of periodical reading; the problem they met while periodical reading. The results showed that the non-English majors did not spend much time in English after-class reading and adopted wrong method of periodical reading. The biggest problem for them is the lack of proper periodicals to read. On the basis of the investigation and corresponding analysis, the thesis puts forward three suggestions: (1) cultivating a good after-class reading habit; (2) selecting suitable periodicals to read; (3) forming good periodical reading habits on how to make full use of periodicals to enhance students reading ability.

摘  要

单纯地依靠书本不能满足培养学生阅读能力的需要。同教材相比,英语期刊具有内容新、容量大,体裁多样化,趣味性强,贴近生活,时应性强等特点,把它作为阅读材料,易激发学生的学习热情,调动了学生学习英语的积极性,从而达到教学目标。本文在简单回顾阅读教学的理论上,以湖南理工学院100名非英语专业学生为对象,采用问卷和面谈等研究工具,调查分析了我校非英语专业生课外阅读英语期刊的情况。调查重点是:学生用于课外阅读的时间,阅读英语期刊的方法,以及阅读英语的过程中遇到的问题。调查结果显示,非英语专业生用于课外阅读的时间较少,拥有不正确的英语期刊阅读习惯。其中最大的问题是可找到的适合的英语期刊太少。针对这些问题,作者结合调查报告的结果,分析并提出了了3个建议:(1)培养学生良好的课外阅读;(2)选择合适的英语期刊阅读;(3)形成正确的英语期刊阅读习惯。
